GiveWell has awarded Dimagi a $1+ million grant to scale service delivery via CommCare Connect and cost-effectively improve essential child health service coverage in Nigeria. CommCare Connect builds on Dimagi’s flagship CommCare platform to enable frontline workers to opt in to additional paid, purposeful work through scalable learn-deliver-verify-pay cycles, strengthening and leveraging existing frontline workforces to improve health outcomes. This funding will enable Dimagi to engage several locally led organizations to deliver the CommCare Connect-Child Health Campaign in targeted, underserved regions of northern Nigeria, scaling efforts through high fidelity replication (versus centralized expansion). Dimagi and our partners will provide more than 300,000 child health visits over the course of 18 months, providing Vitamin A supplementation, oral rehydration solution and zinc, malnutrition screening and promoting vaccination for children under 5. This grant follows a successful initial planning grant, underscoring GiveWell’s belief that CommCare Connect has the potential to be a cost-effective method of increasing coverage. Child Health Campaign Overview
The Child Health Campaign (CCC-CHC) targets high under-five mortality rates due to preventable diseases. FLWs conduct door-to-door visits to register children under five and deliver a range of health services, including:
- Vitamin A Supplementation: Essential for reducing child mortality.
- Vaccine Promotion: Encouraging complete immunization schedules, significantly increasing vaccination rates in marginalized communities.
- ORS and Zinc Distribution: Providing treatments for diarrhea, a leading cause of child mortality.
- Malnutrition Screening and Referral: Identifying and addressing malnutrition, a critical health issue in many LMICs.
Dimagi has achieved early success with locally led partner organizations implementing CCC-CHC in five countries, reaching over 100,000 children. Dimagi’s approach leverages the experience and trust of locally-led organizations operating in high-need communities to recruit and train FLWs, obtain government permissions, and coordinate community sensitization and campaign logistics. The use of CCC ensures that high-quality, verified services are delivered efficiently as the program scales up.
