Healthcare Provider Training: A Mobile Tool for COVID-19 Workers

The Healthcare Provider Training & Monitoring template application was designed by Dimagi to provide direct support and daily monitoring for health workers.
As healthcare systems’ resources and personnel are being re-deployed for COVID-19 response, it is more critical than ever to support the health workers on the front lines. With this rising number and seriousness of cases to manage, health workers have less time to assemble for meetings, report-out on what they’re observing, or participate in training. And because there often isn’t a way for providers to take time to report out on their own symptoms, they are at greater risk of becoming positive COVID-19 cases themselves.
This Healthcare Provider Training & Monitoring application was built to serve hospitals and health facilities’ increased demand for technology that enables health workers to provide a daily “check-in” on these topics. We designed the application to provide easy access to resources for education, training, self risk assessment, and self symptom screening for health workers.
How the App Works
The application was designed to be used on a shared tablet or mobile device. Providers can register themselves in the application or a supervisor can do so on their behalf. Built-in privacy measures ensure personal information like chronic illnesses or their current risk for COVID-19 is held private and inaccessible to the other users of the application. The application can also be installed on individual devices for added privacy and ease of access.
This application has been designed to focus on three primary functions:
First, the Healthcare Provider Training & Monitoring application is designed to rapidly assess health workers’ risk for contracting COVID-19 and screen for any signs and symptoms of the virus. The application makes use of a CDC-adapted self-screening tool to allow the health workers to continuously monitor their symptoms and risk of contracting COVID-19. Based on the results of the symptom screening and risk assessment surveys, the application provides the user with support and messaging about any next steps they should take or precautions they should consider.
Secondly, the app makes use of a feedback loop that allows healthcare providers to report any areas of facility improvement for the management of COVID-19 cases and related preparedness. This functionality allows users to submit any feedback or suggestions for improvements while completing their duties. This form allows for either anonymous or non-anonymous submissions by the user.
Third, this app provides education and training materials to support healthcare providers’ in a variety of priority areas. These education modules include content on water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), protocols for donning PPE, mental health and stress management, risk education, best practices for families of health workers, and general COVID-19 Q&A. These modules and content areas have been designed to provide general information and best practices but can easily be adapted and updated according to local needs and protocols.

All template applications are available for download from the COVID-19 CommCare Template App Library. In order to access the library, you must be logged into a CommCare account.
