Dimagi is excited to take part in the Global Digital Health Forum 2024, showcasing our work across eight sessions spanning three areas: the frontiers of AI in global health, improving frontline jobs and service delivery, and technology to scale mental health care. If you’re attending in person, visit our booth to meet the team and see Open Chat Studio, SureAdhere, and CommCare in action.
The frontiers of AI in global health
What does diversity mean for AI in digital health? (Gayatri Jayal)
Why equitable AI in health depends on diversity in who builds chatbots, who uses them, and whose feedback shapes them, with examples from Dimagi’s work adapting GPT-4 for Malawian Chichewa and early pilots on Open Chat Studio.
AI and storytelling: chatbots for youth sexual health in Senegal and Kenya (Lilianna Bagnoli & Brian DeRenzi)
Two LLM-powered chatbots, co-designed with young adults and partners Shujaaz (Kenya) and RAES (Senegal), use beloved fictional characters to talk with youth about sexual and reproductive health.
Transforming child nutrition monitoring: a predictive ML model (Anna Dixon & Sunaina Walia)
A random-forest model built on CommCare data from 22,000+ children in India predicts the transition from healthy to malnourished within 60 days, enabling proactive home visits and achieving 3.9x better precision than random selection.
Improving frontline jobs and service delivery
Upskilling frontline workers through CommCare Connect (Mercy Simiyu & Themba Nyirenda)
Dimagi’s Learn-Deliver-Verify-Pay model lets frontline workers learn new interventions through self-paced digital courses and get paid for verified delivery. Across five cohorts, 90% accepted the job and 79% delivered verified visits.
Enhancing child health with CommCare Connect: Vitamin A, deworming, and MUAC screening (Saumyadeb Dasgupta & Sagar Atre)
Learnings from the first 100,000 service deliveries across Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania, Nigeria, and India, at roughly $2 per child, with GPS, timestamps, and photos verifying delivery at the point of care.
Technology to scale mental health care
Cultural adaptation in resilience-building interventions (Tanya Kapoor)
Lessons from WellMe, a resilience and wellbeing app tested with 800+ frontline workers across India, Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Malawi, and why culturally adapting concepts like “resilience” and “stress” is essential.
Mental health toolkit: digital solutions for service delivery (Lilianna Bagnoli)
An overview of Dimagi’s open-source mental health toolkit, mapped to the WHO’s pyramid of services, from the WellMe self-care app and the PracticePal chatbot to tools for group therapy and primary care.
Replicable models: scaling effective mental health interventions (Lauren Magoun & Christie Civetta)
How StrongMinds and Finemind use CommCare to digitize and scale evidence-based, task-shared mental health care, from group interpersonal therapy to stepped-care pathways.
